Kanda-myoujin Shrine

The name origin of SURUGADAI is stated in a guide board stands nearby a police station in front of JR Ochanomizu station.
Below is abstracted from the statement.

"Surugadai on high ground was originally located in the tip of south where used to connected with Hongo Yushima and called "Kandayama(mountain)". Ieyasu Tokugawa opened the government in Edo leveled the hill for new city constructions and filled in Hibiya inlet ( now Hibiya park, Shinbashi area)flowed southern Edo castle. But Hirakawa river (origin of Kandagawa) flew into the sea got stopped due to this reclaim and the lower reaches suffered from frequent floods. So that "Kandagawa" river was excavated for water branch and also as an outer canal between current Iidabashi area and Sumida river. Finally with this way current Surugadai was formulated separated from Hongo Yushimadai.
After Ieyasu's death, his retainers released from Ieyasu's servant came from Suruga and built their residence this town nearby Edo castle with a nice view of Mt. Fuji. And it was called Surugadai where used to be spreaded with lots of samurai residents because Suruga samurai lived and to be seen by nice view of Mt. Fuji in Suruga country"

Kanda River

It is also unique about the name origin of "Ochanomizu". Hidetada Tokugawa the second shogun dropped by Kinpousan Kourinji on the way back from Taka-gari (falconry) and had tea served with gushing water. Since then this gushing water was selected best because of purveyor for Tokugawa family and brought to the origin of Ochanomizu. People called this shrine "Ochanomizu Kourinji" which was painted in Edo-zu Byoubu (folding screen with Edo-zu paintings.)
Canal was built surrounded throughout east and west of Edo castle in order to prevent Kandagawa drainage canal and outer canal from flood disaster. And Korinji was located in the north of Edo castle and now moved to Mukougaoka in Bunkyo district. Spring water molded into a flood plain due to repair for expanding width. There is a stone monument about this story stands by the police station of JR Ochanomizu station.

In the monument there is a story such as below.

"The water molded when Kandagawa was dig and cut
Only shape remained by water

In Kyoho 14 Edogawa widened it drained into the river not seen since then
(second proof by Sunako Edo)

In the old time of Keicho era (1596-1615) there was a Zen temple called Kourinji at the foot of Kanda mountain. One day good spring water gushed forth in the temple garden, so that dedicated to Shogun Hidetada. He gave us the admire words and cherished for the water to serve the tea. Since then it was dedicated to the shogun every day and gradually called the temple as Ochanomizu Kourinji. And after this region also called Ochanomizu.

Kandagawa, its extremely as beautiful as the other best view sights such as Shosekiheki, was loved for its elegance and refinement by writers and artists. By time goes the view sight went simultaneously flowed away and molded into Longing the lost view sight, one established this monument.

As well there is a story which says the relation between Kandagawa and Inokashiraike (pond) had been tightly bond through spring water from Ochanomizu. According to "Jyousui ki" (water supply note), it says the river source of Kandagawa is brewed in Inokashiraike and Ieyasu Tokugawa cherished this spring water to serve the tea frequently.
