Tsuyu /Rainy season is a climate phenomenon characteristic seeing in the Eastern Asia, which starts from the beginning of June to mid-July in the early summer. During this season there are many cloudy and rainy days. Tsuyu affects mainland except Hokkaido and Ogasawara island in Japan, but you see also in Taipei and southern China. According to the annual climate data, it is announced Tsuyu expected to start in the 1st week of June in Kanto area, and finish in the end of July.

Origin of the word of Tsuyu

Tsuyu literally means plum rain. But originally the word itself was brought from China called "Baiou". In the area of Yangtze River in China, it is said that people called their rainy season Tsuyu when plums are ripening. Also there is another story said that it was also called Kabiu (Mold rain) because the weather was very humid and it developed molds. Nevertheless this story made not good image and they switched their story to identify the story of the time when plums ripe. This is said it became the origin of the word Tsuyu.

Blue hydrangea

I recall blue hydrangea when I hear about Tsuyu.
When I get inspired with the emotional beauty of Hase temple and Meigetsuin in Kamakura which I visited several times, somehow its muggy and uncomfortable feeling caused by its humidity disappears. I appreciate much of the beauty of Hydrangea bloom here and there in the crowd of greens wrapped with rain drops, and the flowers never stress its presence but hang in the air with sadness.
It is said that more than 2500 hydrangea plants with its 40 kinds of variation fully bloom on passage in Hase temple. Hydrangea in Hase temple are characteristic its various kinds and plenty plants, but on the other side of Meigetsuin in Kita Kamakura is well-known with its compatible kind and color.

Questioning to our hotel staff."What is your impression of Tsuyu? "

In closing here are introduced some comments on Tsuyu season by our hotel staff working Hotel Ryumeikan Ochanomizu Honten.

Ms. Y (Front staff)
I really hated Tsuyu in the past because my hair is curly. But now I often go out to take pictures of hydrangea since I started taking photos. I became like this season so much because I smell of asphalts and soils, then brings me feel trees are preserving its energy.
Ms. H (Front staff)
In Tsuyu season it is a little bit inconvenient time, for example, for laundries it does not dry out so fast and for trouble of clothes with unstable temperature. Sometime muggy and humid, other times becomes cold. But these days we see many rainy goods for prevent Tsuyu problem which are very convenient and we can find fancy goods outdoors.
I like various colored beautiful hydrangeas very much with rainy drops.
Ms. N (Front staff)
I don't like to use umbrella, but it became fun to see various umbrellas recently. But I still don't like rainy days, so I hope it will finish soon.

So why don't you rather enjoy this season feeling nature, collect rainy products? I know the season is not comfortable as much, but I believe it becomes beautiful moments once you visit to see colorful hydrangea which you only see this season.
